Welcome Baby Jackson : Grandview Newborn Photography

Sweet baby Jack. It was such a joy to finally meet you. I was really looking forward to this session as a follow up to an earlier family/maternity session I did with his adorable big sis and parents this spring. Funny thing is the newborn girls have far outnumbered the boys this year, yet this week I had two boys in a row. Well girls, I’m guessing you’ll all have to fight over this one because he’s already too cute for words.

Love, love, love the first basket image. Jackson’s grandma happened to casually mention that she had a basket she converted to a bassinet when Jack’s mom was a baby, and before that it had been used by her mother for laundry. Would I perhaps want to use it for some photos? Yes please!!!!!! I adore getting to incorporate a family’s history into their images. It just makes it all the more special.

Enjoy!

These photos really give us a glimpse of your children’s personalities, unless Jackson isn’t as laid back as he seems, but most special is the glimpse of how much you and Jon love your babies. God bless you all.

Ben : Tri-City Child and Family Photographer

It had been about a year since I had seen the adorable Ben and his mom, Margo. His last session had produced some of my favorite images of 2009, so you could say I had high expectations for this go round. I needn’t have worried. When Ben showed up in suspenders, wingtip shoes, and a fedora I thought I had died and gone to photo heaven. I’m pretty sure Ben is used to the ladies fawning all over him, and I must say I was no exception. To make this session even more fun, his beautiful and sweet mom is expecting another baby in a few months. I love, love, love the maternity shots we got. Scrumptious light, a golden location, and beautiful, stylish details always add up to memorable images.

Enjoy!

Aging Inmates: Columbia Basin Editorial Photography

I recently got to exercise my editorial alter ego when I accepted an assignment from Associated Press to cover the assisted living facility at the Coyote Ridge Correction Center in Connell, Wash. Now in retrospect, photographing an assignment in prison when I’m seven months pregnant perhaps isn’t the smartest decision I ever made, but hey, I’m hardcore. I needn’t have worried, though. Everything went fine, other than the minor problem that the uber matronly maternity shirt I ordered to wear on the assignment didn’t arrive till two days after I needed it. Thanks Pea in the Pod; you’re awesome! Who knew the ugly, way to big oxford shirt lurking in the back of my closet would actually come in handy? Trust me, you don’t want to look fashionable on assignment in prison.

What’s cool about freelancing for AP isn’t the pay, because it’s bad, but seeing where your images end up. Most notably this time around was the Washington Post, MSNBC.com, San Francisco Chronical, and the Boston Globe just to name a few. The state papers ran it too, of course. Kudos to the Spokesman Review for using what I thought was the coolest picture as the main art for the article. I love that paper. They have such an amazing staff of photographers and designers there. If I hadn’t somehow married a farmer and moved to a little town in the middle of nowhere, working as a staff photographer for them was my goal.

I punched out that assignment plus two newborn sessions and a family session a few days before I headed out to my one and only “vacation” this year. Now, I’ve put the vacation in quote marks because I don’t really know if you consider a family reunion relaxing enough for a vacation. The four days in Breckenridge, Colo. with the Summers clan was fun, but the three day drive each way with my parents and my three-year-old son was definitely not. I’m not sure who was more crabby when we got home, my son or my dad; I’m guessing it was me though, lol.

I made it back in time to find one of my newborns arrived ten days early (go baby Katie!) and my computer had crashed and died. Now don’t worry, everything critical was backed up to not one, but two-external hard drives, a hard copy, and an off-site server (are you getting the paranoid journalist vibe, or is it just me.) But it was  a major time-sucker as I had to spend a day driving to the Tri-Cities and then to Yakima to get a new computer, and then another day reinstalling and updating all of my programs and files on the new computer.  I used it as the perfect excuse, though, to upgrade to Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3. Because, as I told my husband, it would be a shame not to take advantage of  that fancy new processor and giganto amount of RAM on the new computer.

So yeah, needless to say, I’m behind on my blogging and imaging. I can’t wait to show everything off though. In between my crazy shooting schedule this week and next, keep an eye out for all of the sessions I’m playing catch up on. In the mean time, here’s a few from the AP assignment:

Kim Fetrow - August 22, 2010 - 6:14 am

How did you get to be an AP photographer? I would love to do that. I enjoyed this post – a little more up my line of work for imageworks in Pasco.
Nice job.

Sandy Summers Russell - August 22, 2010 - 9:46 am

I actually started working for AP when I was still in high school, and then continued doing the occasional job for them throughout college. My contacts for the Seattle bureau came from working as a staff photographer at the Yakima Herald-Republic for six years. I’m sure if you contacted the staff photogs over in Seattle they’d love to hear from you as there aren’t a lot of qualified freelancers in this area. Send me an e-mail and I’ll give you their info.

Kim : Moses Lake Pregnancy Photographer

The lovely Kim and I recently got together for her maternity portrait session. You might recognize Kim as the mom of the adorable and precocious Sadie Mae who recently had her own portrait session. Well now Kim is expecting her second child, another sweet baby girl. I just can’t wait to see how adorable this child is going to be. You’ll just have to see for yourself after I post images from the newborn session some time later this month. For now, though, this session was all about celebrating her pregnancy. Kim wanted to get some with very dramatic lighting and and an artistic feeling to them. I was more than happy to oblige.  I must also give a shout out to her awesome husband who was such a good sport about helping me carry my massively heavy studio lighting bag down their basement stairs. To quote him, “There’s nothing light about this bag!” Hehehehe. Too true.

Bethany Gilbert - August 11, 2010 - 7:19 am

Beautiful job! Love the little girl’s pigtails in the first. So sweet!

Staci Maiers - August 12, 2010 - 6:41 pm

When I saw these photos, I actually started crying. The picture of Sadie feeling Kim’s belly took my breath away. It’s so beautiful — I’m really just speechless. I’m so sad I won’t be there for her birth. Hopefully, Sandy captures as many moments as possible so that Sadie’s and her ‘lil sister’s favorite auntie can feel less bad about not getting to be there…

And that comment from Pamp sounds EXACTLY like him. Classic. Make sure that when you do the newborn session, the lighting bag is twice as heavy!! 😉

Karen White - August 18, 2010 - 6:04 pm

Love the pic of Sadie “listening ” to her baby sister – breathtaking! I remember one simlar (though not as gorgeous) when i was pregnant with my now 4 yr old daughter. it’s moment i will never forget

Miss “N” : Kennewick Senior Photography

Meet the lovely Miss “N”. This star athlete is so excited about starting her Senior year at Kamiakan High School. She’s such a doll too. She made my job easy and fun as we spent a sweltering summer evening capturing her senior portraits. You’d never know it was well over 95 degrees out. In fact, the only hard part for me was deciding which images to show off here on the blog. She looked absolutely gorgeous in all of them. Poor photographer, such a dilemma to be in.  LOL

Trenda Fawver - August 9, 2010 - 10:51 am

Personally I like the third one down best but she is beautiful in all the photos. You made her look like an experienced model.

Kellee Anne Berg - August 9, 2010 - 11:50 am

Love the 3rd picture down, but also like N sitting in the lavendar. Awesome pics!

Patti Berg - August 9, 2010 - 12:00 pm

Appreciated No. 1, and the last picture because they have more color, and it draws more from her… A beautiful girl as she is makes any picture beautiful I am sure….

Terri Brown - August 9, 2010 - 12:05 pm

The pictures are absolutely gorgeous!! My favorites are 1 through 3, but they are all wonderful. How could you go wrong with such a beautiful young lady.

Katlinne - August 9, 2010 - 3:24 pm

My favorite is 1 & 3, what a gorgeous girl 🙂

Shad Harp - August 9, 2010 - 8:01 pm

i have to disagree with everyone to say my favorite is the fourth one down as the sybolism in the photo says lots about the personality of the “N”. For instance the dull dirty train shows that her true personality is hidden by a layer like the dirt on the train but when the train is cleaned up or she uncovers her personality the true beauty is unvaled to the greatest and best of its ability. also the broken window on the train possibly showing a sense of emptiness or a lost sense of hope that someone has smashed until one day someone comes to fix. All are pretty but that one stands out in my mind as the best or the one that really speaks to me.

Aunt Melanie - August 10, 2010 - 8:00 pm

Nicole – It is hard to look at these photos with out getting a little tear in my eye. You are so rare and wonderful and these photos capture all of you. I couldn’t find one that I like any more than another, they are all so beautiful – just like you. While I was looking at them I noticed a few that reminded me of Grandma Linda and a couple that reminded me of myself ohh around 20 + years ago : )

charlene - August 11, 2010 - 7:25 pm

Beautiful pics.

Kelly - August 16, 2010 - 11:37 am

Groovy pictures of an awesome girl! I like something in all of them. They are all Mc-beautiful!

Ken - August 18, 2010 - 10:01 am

Beautiful pictures of a beautiful girl. I like the backgrounds chosen which enhanses her blue eyes.

Phyll Harris Yeoman - August 18, 2010 - 4:21 pm

WOW, I cann’t beleive that is young lady has grown up. Pic 1 thru 3 are my picks. Great color, Great detail.

Casey - August 19, 2010 - 2:23 pm

Picture #6 is a great color contrast. The backgrounds are original not the standard, ordinary senior backgrounds
